Big Changes are Coming to the MDS 3.0 in 2023

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently released a draft version of the Nursing /home Comprehensive (NC) Minimum Data Set (MDS 3.0) Item Set. The Final Version of the NC MDS 3.0 is projected to be effective in October of 2023. The update the Item Set will affect both the Medicare Part A and Longterm Care MDS Assessments. The new items to the MDS 3.0 Item Set were intended to me implemented in October 2020 but was delayed due to the Pandemic and other technical issues.

The plan is to release the final version for the MDS item set later in 2022 in hopes to allow facilities sufficient time to provide training and education to prepare for the October 1, 2023, implementation date.
